One Crazy Dream

"One Crazy Dream" - a painting of a dream I had before I decided to travel to Ireland just as the pandemic kicked off! Months before we left on our trip, I had a long, elaborate dream with very specific imagery. In my dream, we had arrived in Ireland and were visiting a library, where a genealogist was leading classes off in one area. As we looked around, an earthquake hit! There were some other meaningful images in the middle that spoke very specifically to details of the trip and then it transitioned to us being home, where our groceries suddenly arrived by delivery (hilarious), and things were pretty quiet but, out in the back yard, which was now a deep, green pasture, was a black ram. He was sitting quietly, watching an enormous ipad! When I woke up, I wrote everything down and some of the things I was able to glean understanding from and prepare accordingly but the mystery was “why the black sheep and what does that mean?!”

As it turns out, a black sheep is a rare sight, even in Ireland. We did see plenty of sheep, but none black, at first. As our trip continued and pandemic restrictions started to roll out, the black sheep became a sign and an affirmation for our journey. Just as we would find ourselves in a place of real uncertainty, a black sheep would appear around the next rise, the next corner or, once, at a mountain crossroad! It became a visual reminder that everything was in hand, all I had to do was keep going and follow the last instructions and that I would SEE God deliver us back home, I could rest in that knowledge. And He did! (And a big thanks to those on the ground that helped in so many ways to help us through some of the roughest spots!)

Now, I’ve never thought of myself as a black sheep (and I’m still not certain it was symbolic of me at all) but in deciding to paint this piece I realized that there is a message here for everyone that DOES feel like a black sheep. A black sheep is uncommon. It is remarkable. And it might be a sign to those around him, so pay attention!

I hope you will enjoy this series and take a look at the other pieces - “Friendly Face”, “Ewe Are Enough”, “Padraig”, “The Bros”, and “Stand Out”.

“One Crazy Dream” is 24”x30”, acrylics and oils on a gallery edge canvas, ready to hang.
